Crispy and Flavorful: Amish Onion Fritters Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal (optional, for extra crunch)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¾ cup milk (adjust as needed)
  • 1 egg
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prep the onions

  • Slice onions thinly and separate into strands.
  • Pat them dry with a paper towel (this helps crispiness).

2. Make the batter

  • In a bowl, whisk together:
    • Flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, pepper, and sugar.
  • In another bowl:
    • Beat the egg and mix with milk.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients to form a thick batter.

3. Add onions

  • Fold the sliced onions into the batter until well coated.

4. Fry the fritters

  • Heat about 1–2 inches of oil in a pan to 175–180°C (350°F).
  • Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil.
  • Flatten slightly with the back of a spoon.
  • Fry for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.

5. Drain & serve

  • Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Serve hot.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

  • Sprinkle with salt right after frying
  • Serve with:
    • Sour cream
    • Ranch dip
    • Spicy aioli
    • Applesauce (traditional Amish touch)

🔥 Tips for Extra Crispiness

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan
  • Keep oil temperature steady
  • Add a bit more cornmeal or even a tablespoon of cornstarch for crunch
  • Use sweet onions for a milder flavor or yellow onions for stronger taste
