Southern 4-Ingredient Butter Dip Biscuits: The Easiest, Fluffiest Biscuits You’ll Ever Make

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

(Some people count this as “4 ingredients” by grouping the dry ingredients together.)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
Set your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Melt the butter
Pour the melted butter into an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish, making sure it evenly coats the bottom.
  3. Mix dry ingredients
    In a bowl, whisk together:

    • Flour
    • Baking powder
    • Sugar
    • Salt
  4. Add buttermilk
Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined.
The dough will be very soft and sticky—that’s perfect.
  5. Transfer dough
Gently spread the dough over the melted butter in the baking dish.
Use a spatula or your hands to spread it evenly.
  6. Cut before baking
Use a knife to cut the dough into squares (this makes serving easier later).
  7. Bake
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Cool slightly & serve
Let them sit for a few minutes, then serve warm.

Tips for Best Results

  • Don’t overmix the dough—this keeps the biscuits fluffy.
  • If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make a quick substitute:
1½ cups milk + 1½ tablespoons lemon juice or vinegar (let sit 5 minutes).
  • For extra flavor, brush a little honey or garlic butter on top after baking.
