Homemade Fluffy Biscuits (Long, Detailed Recipe)
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 3/4 to 1 cup cold buttermilk (start with 3/4 cup, add more if needed)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing on top — optional but recommended)
Instructions
1. Preheat the Oven
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
If you have a baking sheet, line it with parchment paper.
2. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together:
Flour
Baking powder
Baking soda
Salt
Make sure everything is evenly combined — this helps the biscuits rise perfectly.
3. Add the Cold Butter
Add the cold cubed butter into the flour mixture.
Use a pastry cutter or your fingertips to press the butter into the flour until it looks like coarse crumbs.
Important:
The butter must stay cold so the biscuits get flaky!
4. Add the Buttermilk
Pour in 3/4 cup cold buttermilk.
Mix gently with a spoon until the dough comes together.
If it’s dry, add more buttermilk 1 tablespoon at a time.
You should have a soft but not sticky dough.
5. Shape the Dough
Sprinkle a little flour on your counter.
Turn the dough out and gently press it into a thick rectangle about 1 inch (2.5 cm).
Fold it in half, turn it, press again.
Repeat 2–3 times to create layers.
Cut into circles using a biscuit cutter or a cup.
6. Bake
Place the biscuits on the baking sheet, slightly touching for soft sides or spaced apart for crisp sides.
Bake 15–18 minutes, until the tops are golden.
7. Brush with Butter
As soon as they come out of the oven, brush the tops with melted butter for extra flavor and shine.
Result
Golden, soft, flaky homemade biscuits that taste just like your grandma made them.
