Famous KFC Coleslaw – Classic Copycat

Ingredients

Dressing

  • 120 ml mayonnaise (full-fat)
  • 65 g granulated sugar
  • 60 ml whole milk
  • 60 ml buttermilk
  • 2½ tbsp white vinegar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Coleslaw Vegetables

  • 4 cups finely chopped green cabbage
  • ½ cup finely grated carrot
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped white onion

Instructions

1. Make the Dressing

  1. In a medium bowl, add the mayonnaise.
  2. Add the sugar and whisk until it dissolves completely and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Gradually add the whole milk and buttermilk while continuing to whisk until fully combined.
  4. Add the vinegar, salt, and black pepper, and whisk until creamy and smooth.
  5. Taste the dressing and adjust sugar or salt if needed to balance sweetness and seasoning.

2. Prepare the Vegetables

  1. Wash the cabbage thoroughly and pat dry.
  2. Chop the cabbage very finely for that classic coleslaw texture.
  3. Grate the carrot finely so it blends easily with the cabbage.
  4. Finely chop the onion to avoid large pieces in the mix.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, carrot, and onion evenly.

3. Combine Dressing with Vegetables

  1. Pour the dressing over the vegetable mixture gradually while tossing to coat everything evenly.
  2. Make sure all the vegetables are coated for a uniform flavor.

4. Chill

  1. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a tight lid.
  2. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld perfectly.
  3. Stir before serving to redistribute the dressing.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use full-fat mayonnaise for a rich, creamy texture.
  • Chop the vegetables very finely—this is the key to that authentic KFC texture.
  • Long chilling is essential to blend the flavors fully.
  • Optional: Add a touch of apple cider vinegar for extra tang, but white vinegar gives the classic taste.

Note: This coleslaw stays fresh in the fridge for up to 3 days. Serve it as a side or with fried chicken to get that classic KFC flavor at home.
