- Preheat oven
Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking tray. - Mix dry ingredients
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. - Add butter
Rub the cold butter into the flour using your fingers until it looks like coarse crumbs. - Add liquid
Stir in the milk (and vanilla if using) until a soft dough forms. Don’t overmix. - Shape the dough
Turn onto a floured surface, gently knead once or twice, then pat into a 1-inch thick round. - Cut scones
Cut into wedges or use a round cutter. - Brush & bake
Brush tops with a little milk and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden.
