There’s something magical about a classic Black folks’ sweet potato pie — the silky texture, the warm spices, the nostalgic aroma that fills the whole house. This pie is creamy, comforting, and deeply rooted in Southern tradition. Whether you’re making it for the holidays or a simple Sunday dinner, this recipe delivers that true soul-food flavor every single time.

Ingredients

For the Filling:

  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2–3 medium sweet potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk (or whole milk)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger (optional for warmth)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Crust:

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Directions

1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

  1. Wash, peel, and cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks.
  2. Place them in a pot of boiling water and cook for 20–25 minutes until fork-tender.
  3. Drain well and mash until smooth. The smoother the mash, the silkier the pie!

2. Make the Creamy Filling

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potatoes and softened butter.
  2. Mix until the butter melts into the warm potatoes.
  3. Add the sugar, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Beat with a hand mixer (or whisk well) until the filling becomes creamy and light.
  5. Add the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.
  6. Mix again until everything is perfectly blended and velvety.

3. Assemble the Pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pour the sweet potato filling into the unbaked pie crust.
  3. Smooth the top with a spatula.
  4. Tap the pie lightly to remove air bubbles.

4. Bake to Perfection

  1. Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until the center is set and no longer jiggles.
  2. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil halfway through baking.
  3. Let the pie cool completely to allow the filling to firm up.

5. Serve It Soul-Food Style

Slice and serve at room temperature or chilled. Add:

  • Whipped cream
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream

This pie is even better the next day — the flavors deepen beautifully!

Pro Tips for the Best Sweet Potato Pie

  • Roasting instead of boiling intensifies the flavor.
  • Use fresh sweet potatoes, never canned — that’s the secret to authentic Black folks’ pie.
  • Blend well to avoid lumps.
  • Don’t overbake — once the center is set, remove it.
