Ham & White Beans

Ham & White Beans — A Cozy, Slow-Cooked Classic Full of Comfort

If you’re craving a warm, hearty, old-fashioned dish that tastes like something your grandmother would make on a cold day, this Ham & White Beans recipe is exactly what you need.
It’s rich, comforting, budget-friendly, and packed with deep flavor thanks to the slow simmering of ham bones, hocks, or shanks. The beans become creamy, the ham becomes tender, and the broth thickens into a cozy, rustic stew that feels like a hug in a bowl.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried Northern white beans
  • About 1 lb ham (ham bone, ham hocks, shanks, or diced ham)
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 bay leaf (optional)
  • 6–7 cups water or chicken broth
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • Optional: pinch of paprika or cumin
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

How to Make Ham & White Beans

1. Prep the Beans

This step helps the beans cook evenly and become extra creamy.

  • Rinse the dried beans under cold water.
  • Optional: soak them 4 hours or overnight to shorten the cooking time.
  • Drain and set aside.

2. Build the Base

In a large pot or slow cooker:

  • Add the beans.
  • Place the ham bone or ham pieces on top.
  • Add onion powder, garlic powder, and bay leaf.
  • Pour in enough water or broth to cover everything completely.

3. Slow Cook for Deep Flavor

Stovetop Method:

  • Bring the pot to a boil for 10 minutes.
  • Lower the heat, cover, and let it simmer 2–3 hours.
  • Stir occasionally and add a little water if needed.

Slow Cooker (Crockpot):

  • Combine all ingredients in the slow cooker.
  • Cook on LOW for 6–8 hours until beans are soft and creamy.

The longer it cooks, the richer and softer everything becomes.

4. Shred the Ham

Once the beans are tender:

  • Remove the ham bone or large pieces.
  • Shred the meat with a fork.
  • Return the shredded ham to the pot.

This step blends the flavors perfectly.

5. Adjust Flavor & Thickness

  • Taste before adding salt (ham is already salty).
  • Add pepper, paprika, or cumin if you want extra depth.
  • Let the pot simmer 10 more minutes until thick and creamy.

If you prefer a thicker stew, mash a few beans with a spoon and mix them back in.

How to Serve

Serve your Ham & White Beans hot with:

  • Crusty bread
  • Cornbread
  • Rice
  • Mashed potatoes

Sprinkle fresh parsley on top for color and freshness.

Tips for a Perfect Batch

  • Ham bones give the BEST flavor — use them if you can.
  • Keep heat low for a creamy texture.
  • Add salt only at the end.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day.
